Agility Robotics has officially unveiled Digit 5, its latest generation of general-purpose humanoid robots designed specifically for large-scale industrial deployment. Announced on September 15, 2026, Digit 5 represents a significant shift from experimental prototypes to robust, commercially viable workforce solutions for logistics and manufacturing.

“Cooperatively Safe” by Design

The most significant bottleneck in deploying heavy industrial robots has traditionally been safety. Humanoid robots operating in the same spaces as humans usually require strict physical barriers or cages. Agility Robotics aims to eliminate this requirement with Digit 5’s “cooperatively safe” architecture.

Equipped with proprietary AI algorithms and multiple sensor technologies including cameras and ToF (Time-of-Flight) sensors, Digit 5 can constantly monitor its surroundings for human presence. It uses visual and auditory cues to communicate its motion intent clearly to nearby workers. An independent safety controller ensures the robot can immediately halt or assume a safe seated position if a person breaches its safety perimeter.

Continuous Operation: 20 Hours a Day

In warehouse environments, downtime directly translates to lost productivity. To address this, Agility Robotics has completely revamped Digit’s power system.

While the robot boasts a 90-minute runtime under typical workloads, its standout feature is a revolutionary rapid-charging system. Digit 5 can autonomously dock and recharge in just 9 minutes. This rapid turnaround allows a single unit to operate for over 20 hours within a 24-hour period, a critical metric for 24/7 logistics operations.

Performance and Scalability

Standing at 5’11” (1.8 m) and weighing 284 lbs (129 kg), Digit 5 has been structurally reinforced to handle heavy-duty tasks. It features a completely redesigned leg architecture utilizing proprietary cycloidal actuators.

The robot is rated for a payload capacity of 50 lbs (22.7 kg) and is designed for repetitive tasks such as tote handling, machine tending, and trailer unloading. The inclusion of swappable grippers with ISO standard mounting flanges means it can be quickly adapted for different roles on the factory floor.

With over $300 million in multi-year customer orders already reported, Agility Robotics is positioning Digit 5 not just as a technological showcase, but as a scalable product. Early access for enterprise partners is slated for the first half of 2027.
