Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPeng has officially commissioned dedicated production lines for its IRON humanoid robot in Guangzhou, marking a significant milestone in the embodied AI industry. The first units have autonomously walked off the production line, signaling the critical transition from research and development prototyping to industrial-scale manufacturing.

Transition to Industrial Scale Manufacturing

XPeng’s approach to the IRON robot relies heavily on leveraging its existing automotive manufacturing expertise. The new production lines feature over 80 percent automation in core processes, integrating the same rigorous quality control systems developed for its electric vehicle business.

Currently in the initial production phase, these robots are being deployed directly into XPeng’s own stores and factory campuses. This internal deployment strategy allows the company to test and refine the robot’s capabilities in real-world, controlled industrial environments before a broader commercial release planned for 2027.

76 Degrees of Freedom and Autonomous Navigation

The physical design of the IRON robot emphasizes high articulation to perform dexterous tasks in human environments. Standing at 1.78 meters and weighing 70 kilograms, the robot boasts a total of 76 degrees of freedom. Notably, 42 of these are concentrated in its hands (21 per hand), allowing for complex manipulation of tools and parts.

Navigation and cognitive processing are powered by three proprietary XPeng Turing AI chips, delivering up to 2,250 TOPS of computing power. This allows its Physical AI foundation model to run directly on the hardware, processing data from its 720-degree vision system (360 degrees horizontal and vertical).

As humanoid robots like the XPeng IRON and Tesla Optimus move closer to mass adoption, the focus is shifting rapidly from viral demonstrations to practical utility, battery life, and reliability in industrial settings.
