Following years of hydraulic parkour research, Boston Dynamics has completed a comprehensive architectural shift with the All-Electric Atlas. In recent industrial trials conducted in collaboration with parent company Hyundai Motor Group, Atlas demonstrates how electric actuators unlock operational speeds beyond human biomechanics.

Continuous 360-Degree Joint Rotations

Human anatomy is limited by restricted joint angles: reaching for an item behind requires turning the hips, feet, and entire stance.

The electric Atlas eliminates this constraint through custom slip-ring rotary actuators capable of continuous 360-degree rotation without mechanical end-stops:

  • The torso rotates fully over the pelvis without cable entanglement.
  • Shoulders, elbows, and knees invert instantly to retrieve components from behind or self-right from ground level in seconds.
  • In automotive parts bin picking (handling shock absorbers and control arms), Atlas does not turn around: it grabs a part in front, rotates its torso 180 degrees, and deposits it behind, cutting cycle time in half.

Eliminating Hydraulic Noise, Leaks, and Thermal Drift

While high-pressure hydraulics (350 bar) provided unmatched explosive power for acrobatic research, they were incompatible with clean manufacturing standards. Oil leaks, loud pump noise, and rapid overheating made commercial deployment impractical.

The all-electric Atlas uses custom brushless motors mated to high-efficiency cycloidal gearboxes. The platform is quieter, lighter (weighing just 89 kg / 196 lbs at 1.50 m), and four times more energy-efficient, with predictive maintenance driven by onboard current telemetry.

Omnidirectional Optical Sensor Ring

Atlas’s circular head module discards faux-human facial contours in favor of an illuminated ring housing wide-angle optical cameras and depth sensors.

This architecture ensures zero visual blind spots. The robot continuously tracks human personnel and workspace obstacles in all 360 degrees, fulfilling ISO 10218 collaborative robotics safety compliance.
