Toyota has unveiled its new ELEY (Embodied Learning robot for Enhanced Yield) humanoid robot, marking a significant milestone in industrial automation. Starting in 2028, the automotive giant plans to invest approximately 1 trillion yen ($6.4 billion) annually to deploy 400,000 robots across its global production network.

A Wheeled Approach to Humanoid Robotics

Unlike the bipedal designs popularized by Tesla’s Optimus or Boston Dynamics’ Atlas, Toyota has opted for a pragmatic wheeled base for ELEY. Weighing around 50 kilograms, this design choice prioritizes stability, energy efficiency, and reliability in flat factory environments.

The robot is equipped with specialized two-fingered mechanical grippers, optimized for delicate tasks rather than brute-force heavy lifting. Toyota’s philosophy centers on human-robot collaboration, with ELEY designed to work alongside human staff, not replace them.

Physical AI and Learning from the Masters

At the core of ELEY’s capabilities is its Physical AI. Instead of relying purely on pre-programmed routines, ELEY learns by observing veteran human workers, known in Toyota as takumi.

During the training phase, these master craftsmen wear specialized sensor jigs on their hands, allowing the robot to map and mimic their precise movements. In recent demonstrations, ELEY successfully mastered complex tasks like folding fabric after approximately 1,500 repetitions. Once a robot learns a skill at one facility, that behavioral data can be distributed across Toyota’s global network, enabling fleet-wide skill acquisition.

The 400,000-Unit Deployment Plan

The scale of Toyota’s automation initiative is unprecedented in the humanoid sector. The 400,000 units planned for deployment by 2028 include both ELEY humanoids and other advanced industrial robots.

  • 150,000 units will be integrated directly into Toyota’s own manufacturing plants.
  • 250,000 units will be distributed across Toyota’s group affiliates and suppliers.

This massive rollout underscores a shift from research-phase robotics to full-scale commercial integration, signaling that practical, task-oriented humanoid robots are ready for the factory floor.
