BMW’s flagship manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina (which assembles the X5, X6, and X7 SUV lines) has marked a watershed milestone in industrial robotics: the successful multi-week operational deployment of the Figure 02 bipedal humanoid robot directly on the active chassis assembly floor.
Moving beyond choreographed studio demos, Figure 02 was tasked with real production workflow under tight cycle-time constraints, executing repetitive sheet-metal positioning operations traditionally taxing for human operators.
Precision Sheet Metal Placement Under Sub-Millimeter Tolerances
The primary task assigned to Figure 02 was picking stamped sheet metal chassis brackets from transport containers and seating them into welding fixtures with tolerances below one millimeter.
This operation requires two engineering capabilities standard robotic arms struggle to combine:
- Bimanual Dexterity and Compliant Grip: Powered by 4th-generation humanoid hands with 16 degrees of freedom (DoF) and dense tactile sensors across each finger segment, Figure 02 manipulates sheet metal without warping thin gauges or slipping.
- Autonomous Locomotion Across Workcells: Rather than being anchored to a fixed floor plinth, Figure 02 navigates dynamically between staging bins and the welding cell, adapting in real time to slight bin misalignments via six onboard RGB perception cameras.
Onboard Embodied AI: OpenAI Vision-Language Model Integration
A decisive technical upgrade in Figure 02 is its internal computing architecture. Figure engineers tripled the onboard compute payload, allowing custom Vision-Language Models (VLMs) developed in partnership with OpenAI to run directly on the robot’s internal hardware.
Instead of executing pre-baked hard-coded trajectories:
- The robot perceives its 360-degree environment continuously.
- It dynamically corrects end-effector trajectories if a part sits skewed by several degrees in its bin.
- It communicates verbally in natural language with human technicians to report empty bins or defective components.
Engineering Verdict and 2026 Fleet Expansion
With a 2.25 kWh battery pack integrated into its chassis torso, Figure 02 delivers over 5 hours of continuous runtime, utilizing high-current dorsal contact charging between work shifts.
BMW and Figure AI have confirmed plans to expand the humanoid automation program across additional assembly cells in late 2026. This deployment validates that bipedal humanoids have transitioned from theoretical research platforms into deployable factory tooling.
